Stephen J. Dobraniecki, age 71, died August 30th, at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with prostate cancer. Steve was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen Krakowski; and his parents, Stephen and Sophie Dobraniecki. He is survived by his wife, Susan Nilstoft Dobraniecki; his children, Jamie (Ilka) Dobraniecki and Lauren (David) Hawkins; and his step children, Brian (Laura) Nilstoft and Erik (Sarah) Nilstoft. He is also survived by his brother, Dave Dobraniecki; sister, Denise (Pete) Daly; niece, Meaghan; nephews, Peter and Patrick; grandchildren, Ethan, Camilla, Emma, Kate, Quynn, Ryder, Joshua, Penelope, and Amelia; as well as many cousins. Steve graduated from Salesianum School and the University of Delaware with a marketing degree. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Albany as a petty officer in radio communications.
Steve was an avid reader and was even known to read while waiting at red lights. He volunteered at the Wilmington Public Library and held the position of President of the Friends for many years. He was a frequent member of the “Jug Club” at Salesianum and served as scoutmaster of Troop 919 and assistant scout master of Troop 86. Steve was president of The Commercial-Industrial Realty Council. At the time of his death, he was a broker with Emory Hill. He was an athlete who played tennis for years, jogged every day, and regularly worked out. After his family, his true love was golf. One of his happiest days was when he scored a hole-in-one on Father’s Day this past year with his son, brother, and brother-in-law. He loved the water whether he was canoeing, kayaking, sailing, or simply sitting on the beach enjoying the sunshine. An avid traveler, Steve visited many countries from France to Russia, Thailand, and his favorite chill place, Mexico. Steve was a foodie and often asked what was for dinner upon awakening. He was often a mischievous grandparent who was worshipped by his grandchildren for his unconditional love and humor.
A visitation is planned from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Mealey Funeral Home at Limestone and Milltown Roads on Thursday September 6th. A visitation is also planned from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at St. John the Beloved, 907 Milltown Road Wilmington, DE 19808, on Friday, September 7th, followed by at 10:30 funeral Mass.
