Shirley (Sue) Bowen, age 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2019, at the Kentmere Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Wilmington, DE. Born in Detroit, MI in 1924, Sue was the daughter of the late Robert and Ruby (Newman) Bowerman. She was predeceased by her husbands, William Houle, John Laird, and John Bowen; her brother, Bob Bowerman; and her son, Jay Laird.
Sue is survived by her daughters, Bobbi (Dave) Karpinski, Diane (Richard) Jones Zalewski; her son, Scott (Pam) Houle; her sister, Carol Canada; her brothers-in-law, Tom and Jerry Houle; her grandchildren: Eric (Becca) Karpinski and Stephanie Karpinski; Greg (Judy) Jones and Shelley Consiglio; Cory, John Paul and Adam J. Houle; and Peter (Kristin) Zalewski; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Sue worked energetically and tirelessly to support herself and her family. She loved the outdoors, horses and horseback-riding, dancing, especially to Big Band music, endlessly drawing house floor plans, and later in life, her hot chocolate, her time at Lakeshore Commons in Wilmington, NC and visiting nearby Carolina Beach. She also loved being surrounded by family and friends and welcomed their presence her life. Never one to shy away from adventure, she always met new beginnings and new challenges with gusto and determination.
The family would like to give special thanks to Billie-Jo Phillips , a dear friend who made Sue smile every day. The family would also like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Kentmere Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center and Delaware Hospice for their competent and loving care during the last years of her life.
